What is a Reproduction ("Repo") Cart?

A reproduction cart is an unofficial copy of a game burned onto a blank cartridge — honest aftermarket, not the same beast as a counterfeit sold as factory-sealed truth.

Counterfeit vs reproduction

  • Counterfeit: dressed to pass as original and sold as genuine — that's fraud.
  • Reproduction: usually sold openly as a repo, often for titles that cost $500+ to own legitimately. Fine for playing; poison for a collection if you mistake it for real.

Common targets

High on the hit list: Mother 3 (Japan), EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, and anything with no official Western release that still has rabid demand. If the price feels too kind, assume nothing.

How to spot a repo

  • PCB color doesn't match documented originals for that revision.
  • Label print quality, registration, or gloss is off compared to known-good copies.
  • Missing or wrong Nintendo seal of quality details.
  • Weight and shell feel subtly wrong in the hand — trust the nerds who've held hundreds.

Why collectors care

Repos are fine for playing and worthless for a money-serious collection. Always verify before you pay CIB money — one sloppy buy erases the spreadsheet fantasy.
