Where to Start · GTA 6 vs GTA 5
Should I Play GTA 5 Before GTA 6?
GTA 6 lands May 26, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar isn't shipping a pop quiz — you'll get Leonida cold-opened like every other numbered GTA.
The blunt answer
You do not need GTA 5 to understand GTA 6. Each mainline entry is a fresh cast, fresh city, fresh crime spree — just like how GTA 3 (Liberty City) didn't require Vice City homework, and Niko Bellic's GTA 4 never hands you homework from Los Santos. No crossover pop quiz.
Play 5 anyway
GTA 5 is still one of the best open-world sandboxes ever shipped — three protagonists, Los Santos sprawl, Online if you dare. If you've somehow dodged it, you're robbing yourself before the next era starts.
The family tree (loosely)
Think of it as vibes, not homework: 3 → Vice City → San Andreas → 4 (Liberty City again) → 5 (Los Santos) → 6 (Leonida / Vice City energy). Easter eggs connect; your save file doesn't.
Pre-flight checklist
GTA 5 first if you haven't touched it. GTA 4 if you want grimy, story-first Rockstar. Vice City or San Andreas if you want PS2-era swagger — not required, just fun.
Launch reality — No PC date at launch — plan for console or patient waiting. The trilogy remasters already taught everyone how fast licenses can wobble; read delisted games if you care about digital gray areas.
