Oblivion Remastered — Do You Need the Original?
April 2025 refresh — same Cyrodiil potato faces spiritually, now in Unreal 5 lipstick. It's not a demake playlist; it's the same ridiculously stacked RPG with fewer jaggies.
Do you need the 2006 disc?
No. The remaster is Oblivion — quests, voice-flail, guild glut, Shivering Isles madness. You're not "missing the authentic jank" unless nostalgia is the whole meal.
Skyrim or Morrowind first?
Also no. Elder Scrolls entries share lore weather but not save imports. Jump to Cyrodiil whenever.
What changed vs what didn't
Story beats, faction arcs, absurd NPC schedules — intact. Lighting, models, UX tweaks — the point of the package. Expect the same gravitational pull toward "I'll do main quest later" after joining your fourth guild.
Insider priority
The Dark Brotherhood thread is still the flex everyone brings up at parties — murder puzzle plotting that modern open worlds rarely match. Sleep on it and you're doing Oblivion wrong on purpose.
How long is Oblivion Remastered
Main story: about 25-30 hours. Main story + side quests: roughly 50-80 hours. Full completion with guild questlines and DLC can push past 100 hours.
Shivering Isles adds around 10-15 hours by itself and is considered essential by most fans.
Which platform should you play on
PC (Steam) is the best all-around version for mods, settings control, and long-term performance flexibility. PS5 and Xbox Series X both run well at 60fps for a smooth couch setup.
It is available on Xbox Game Pass at launch, and there is currently no Nintendo Switch version.
Is the Shivering Isles DLC worth it
Yes. Shivering Isles is widely considered one of the best expansion packs in RPG history and is the only add-on most players truly need for a complete Oblivion run.
It comes with the Deluxe Edition. Knights of the Nine is still good, but shorter and more optional.
Should you play Morrowind or Skyrim after Oblivion
If the lore and world-building hooked you, play Morrowind next. It is the most distinct Elder Scrolls entry and lands best when you already understand the setting.
If you want a more modern feel, Skyrim is the easier transition. The games share a universe, but there is no direct story continuity, so you can play in any order.
