Where to Start with Gears of War
Boot Gears of War (2006). That A-button hug against cover invented the modern third-person shooter cadence — chunky, loud, and still nasty on higher difficulties.
Original trilogy spine
Gears 1 → 2 → 3 is Marcus, Dom, Cole train, Delta Squad grief cycle. The Gears 3 finale pays off a decade of bromide and blood — genuinely one of gaming's most satisfying trilogy landings if you put the work in.
New saga (still COG-adjacent)
Gears 4 and 5 hand the spotlight to fresh faces; you can cold-start them, but Gears 5 especially sings when you know why the old guard limped so hard. Also it's a tech flex — one of the prettiest stress tests on Xbox.
E-Day on the horizon
Gears of War: E-Day (2026) rewinds before Locust memes — think younger Marcus energy. Catch up on OG trilogy first if you want the emotional gravity to land.
Playing today? Gears 1–3 run backwards-compatible on Series X|S with enhancements — closest thing Xbox has to dragging Halo CE forward.
