Where to Start with Gears of War
Gears of War is The Coalition's cover-based third-person shooter franchise running since 2006 — the Xbox 360's defining exclusive and the series that popularised the cover shooting mechanic that dominated game design for a decade. Set on the planet Sera, the series follows Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad against the Locust Horde and later the Swarm across five mainline entries.
The story builds continuously and is best played in order, though each game provides enough context for newcomers to follow along.
If you only play one Gears game
Play Gears of War (2006) — the original. It defined the franchise and remains one of the best cover shooters ever made — the chainsaw bayonet, the active reload system, the Locust design, and a co-op campaign that is still among the best in the genre. The Gears 5 collection includes a remaster of the original on Xbox/PC. If you want the most modern entry instead, Gears 5 (2019) is the most technically accomplished and accessible without prior knowledge.
The original trilogy
Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 is the Marcus Fenix trilogy — the complete story of the Locust War and its aftermath. Gears 2 is the most emotionally ambitious with the underground Locust stronghold and the Maria subplot. Gears 3 is the best technically and concludes the original story with genuine weight. All three are in The Ultimate Edition / backward compatible on Xbox Series. The Gears of War Ultimate Edition (remaster of the original) is the best version of the first game.
Gears of War: Judgment
Judgment (2013) is a prequel following Baird and Cole before the events of the original trilogy. It is the weakest mainline entry — shorter, less story-driven, and the Smart Spawn System that replaced wave enemies was divisive. Worth playing after the trilogy for completionists but not as an entry point.
Gears 4 and 5 — the new era
Gears 4 (2016) introduces JD Fenix — Marcus's son — and a new threat in the Swarm. It is a competent continuation that plays it safe. Gears 5 (2019) is the best game since the original trilogy — open world sections in the campaign, Kait Diaz as the emotional centre, and a choice that affects the ending. Gears 5 is on Xbox Game Pass and is the best modern entry point. The campaign is co-op for up to three players.
Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics (2020) is a turn-based tactics game — XCOM-style grid combat set before the original Gears. Excellent game in its own right and a different way to experience the Gears universe. Available on Xbox/PC and Game Pass.
What platforms you need
All mainline Gears games — Xbox One/Series/PC via backward compatibility or native versions. All on Xbox Game Pass. Gears 5 is the most accessible current entry. The original Gears Ultimate Edition is the best version of Gears 1.
Recommended order
Gears of War (Ultimate Edition) → Gears 2 → Gears 3 → Gears 4 → Gears 5. Judgment between 3 and 4 for completionists. Tactics at any point if the strategy format appeals.
