Where to Start with Shinobi
Shinobi is Sega's ninja action franchise running since 1987 — one of the defining arcade action series of the late 1980s and early 1990s, following master ninja Joe Musashi and later his descendants through missions against criminal organisations and supernatural threats. The series is known for its precise platforming, the ninjutsu magic system, and a difficulty that rewards mastery over attrition.
Shinobi peaked on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive with Shinobi III and has had two notable modern revivals — a PS2 era entry and a 3DS game. The classic era remains the definitive Shinobi experience.
If you only play one Shinobi game
Play Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (1993, Genesis). It is the peak of the franchise — fluid controls for the era, excellent level variety including horseback and surfing stages, the ninjutsu system at its most refined, and Joe Musashi at his most capable. Shinobi III is available in the Sega Genesis Classics collection on PS4/Xbox/Switch/PC and on Nintendo Switch Online (Genesis library). If you want one Shinobi game that captures the franchise at its best, Shinobi III is the definitive answer.
The Revenge of Shinobi
The Revenge of Shinobi (1989, Genesis) is the second recommendation — the Genesis debut of the franchise and a significant leap from the arcade original. Joe Musashi rescuing his kidnapped fiancée, eight worlds across Japan and the United States, and boss fights that originally included unlicensed versions of Spiderman, Batman, Godzilla, and Rambo (later changed in revisions). Revenge of Shinobi established the Genesis Shinobi template that Shinobi III perfected. Available in Sega Genesis Classics.
The original Shinobi
Shinobi (1987, Arcade/Master System) is the origin — Joe Musashi rescuing kidnapped ninja children from the Zeed crime syndicate. The arcade original is a coin-op action game with hostage rescue as the primary mechanic. The Master System home version is the most accessible classic version. Available in various Sega classic compilations. Worth playing for historical context after Shinobi III.
Shinobi (PS2)
Shinobi (2002, PS2) revived the franchise in 3D — Hotsuma as the new protagonist, the Akujiki sword that must be fed with enemy souls or it drains your health, and a difficulty that is even more demanding than the classic games. The mechanic of constantly needing to kill to survive creates intense combat pressure. Divisive on release for its difficulty but respected by fans who mastered it. Physical PS2 copy required.
Shinobi (3DS)
Shinobi (2011, Nintendo 3DS) is a 2D revival that captures the classic formula reasonably well — side-scrolling action, the ninjutsu system, and a challenging difficulty. Physical 3DS copy required following the eShop closure. A valid modern entry point for players who want the classic 2D formula without requiring retro hardware.
