Sega

Sega is a Japanese entertainment conglomerate whose game division traces back to 1960. During the early 1990s it positioned the Genesis against Nintendo’s Super NES — marketing lines such as “Sega does what Nintendon’t” became part of pop culture and shorthand for how bitter first-party competition could get before CDs were standard in living rooms.

After leaving dedicated hardware following the Dreamcast discontinuation around 2001, Sega pivoted to third-party publishing. Fans still celebrate the Dreamcast window for early online experiments and an unusually forward-looking library for the price point.
