PlayStation Portable (PSP)

The PSP was unfairly ahead of its time — near-PS2 ambition in a jeans pocket in 2005. The library flies under the hype radar and prices are still mostly reasonable if you avoid the true oddballs.

UMD reality

Proprietary little discs in plastic shells — no PSP, no playback. Cases crack and spider; CIB premiums punish cracked hubs and missing foam. Always open the case before you celebrate a "near mint" listing photo.

Valuable / thin supply

  • Coded Arms: Contagion — scarce, never got a modern rerelease victory lap.
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice — $60+ CIB when it surfaces.
  • Hammerin' Hero — $80+ CIB.
  • Class of Heroes — $100+ CIB territory.

Must-own PSP games

  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
  • Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
  • Persona 3 Portable
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
  • Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

Digital storefront closure

PSP's digital store is gone — for most titles, physical UMDs or emulation are the practical paths. That quietly raises the stakes on discs that never got ports.

PSP Go caveat

Digital-only, no UMD drive — everything had to be downloaded. With the store dead, a Go without previously purchased games attached is basically a slick paperweight for most of the library. Cool hardware, brutal dependency chain.
