PlayStation (PS1)

The grey box that made CDs normal and Sony a household name. You're chasing spine cards, black-label vs greatest hits, and discs that still read after twenty-five years of questionable storage.

Why it still matters

PS1 is where Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and half the survival-horror canon learned to scare you on a budget TV. Imports are fair game — many titles are language-friendly if you know what you're buying.

Collector reality

Jewel cases crack; longbox-era releases wear their age. Memory cards and DualShock controllers are part of the hobby — test saves before you brag about a "complete" RPG. Surface scratches are negotiable; rot from the inside out is not.
